CHILDREN'S WORKSHOPS

EDUCATION

In addition to making instruments, SOUND WORLD runs workshops in instrument-making for all ages and abilities, particularly in schools, where the craft is a vibrant activity adding an exciting dimension to National Curriculum requirements in music, science and technology.

SOUND WORLD has worked in educational making residencies with the BBC National Orchestra Of Wales, the Barbican Centre and sinfonia ViVA among many others, and run bamboo instrument workshops at the Eden Project, the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, WOMAD in Reading, Morecambe, Caceres (Spain), and Las Palmas (Canary Islands), as well as in schools, academies and colleges all over the UK.

Making their own instruments hugely enhances children's experience of music and SOUND WORLD'S workshops are always popular and successful. The workshops range from a single 2-hour session to series occupying several days where a wide variety of instruments can be made.

Making instruments is a brilliant activity for children, encouraging their natural creativity and introducing them to all sorts of new and exciting concepts and techniques. It is also a superb cross-curricular activity. SOUND WORLD runs workshops in schools and at other centres and events for 8-13 year old children.
The workshops are typically half a day long for each class. At the end of that, the children will have each made two or three fulfilling instruments, seen and heard a huge variety of novel instruments, and learnt a great deal in a short time, largely through practical application. A checklist of achievements that the children will have experienced would include:-
*
Hands-on demonstration of a variety of instruments from all over the world

*
Learning about the astonishing properties of bamboo and its myriad uses

*
Making session (tools provided) geared to the ability and age range of the participants

*
Use of a variety of simple hand-held tools

*
Construction of (usually at least two) instruments per participant, ranging from simple toy noisemakers to sophisticated instruments with wide tonal and expressive range

*
First experiments in playing and playing together and suggestions for follow up activities

*
An emphasis on co-operation, multi-culturalism, use of appropriate technologies, sustainable materials and fun!
